Study: Men with STDs Give Off Bad Smell

According to new research from the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk, Russia, men with sexually transmitted disease actually smell worse than their non-infected peers. In a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, lead author Mikhail Moshkin wrote that his research "revealed that infection disease reduces odor attractiveness in humans."




Women who participated in Moskin's study found that men infected with gonorrhea had a "putrid" odor, MSNBC reported.

Thirty-four men between the ages of 17 and 25 participated in the study, according to reports. Of these men, 16 were healthy; 13 had gonorrhea; and five had recently overcome a gonorrhea infection with medical treatment. The men wore tight-fitting t-shirts with special sweat-absorbing pads sewn under the arms for an hour, then 18 women between the ages of 17 and 20 were asked to sniff and analyze each pad.

Results indicated the women found the infected men to only be half as pleasant-smelling as the healthy men when they were asked to rank their findings.

The off-putting smell might be a biological warning. "We can conclude that unpleasant body odor of infected persons can reduce the probability of a dangerous partnership," the Moshkin wrote in the study.

If you're new beau isn't always fresh smelling, keep in mind that gonorrhea isn't the only issue that might cause body odor. According to information from the Mayo Clinic , "sweat smells can be influenced by a variety of factors, including a person's mood, diet, some drugs and medical conditions and even hormone levels."
